Profile

Clinical Psychologist and Mental Health Specialist with over 7 years experience working with adults and children in hospital, clinic and school settings. Intervention Specialist in child and adolescent behaviour and learning.

Experience

Liz Khaemba is the current Chairperson of Clinical Psychologists Association of Kenya (CPAK). She is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice and a consultant for private hospitals.  She has specialized training in Child and Adolescent Development (Therapies and Intervention). Liz is a qualified learning assessment specialist certified to recommend examination accommodations and classroom interventions for children with learning difficulties. Her PhD study proposal is an intervention study on children with learning difficulties who live and learn in schools in resource limited settings.

Liz has successful practical experience in managing trauma teams, conducting mental health trainings and providing psychosocial support services for individual, corporate and the humanitarian sector. She is the Secretary of Eastern Africa Academy of Childhood Disability, and a member of Kenya Paediatric Association, Kenya Psychiatric Association and Kenya Cancer Association.  She has held trainings on Psychological First Aid, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, among others.  She possesses over 10 years’ experience in mental health clinical and research settings.

Liz has participated in several research studies organized by the University of Washington (UW) and Centres for Disease Control (CDC).  These included the INK study, whose objective was to assess the impact of HIV on neuro-cognitive development in children in Kenya.  Her role as Clinic Psychologist/Trainer included the development of a training manual, an SOP and training of medical personnel on palliative/end-of-life care and grief therapy for caregivers and critically ill children. She was also Lead Trainer on the UW research study, Mediational Intervention for Sensitizing Caregivers (MISC) that sought to find the impact of early intervention on the cognitive development of HIV positive on ART.

Currently, she works as Director/Lead Clinical Psychologist for Transformative Learning Company (TLC).  She is a diligent learner and worker who was awarded for graduating Summa Cum Laude in her undergraduate psychology class and more recently for graduating at the top of her class with the highest honours in her Master of Science class.  She is a weekly columnist of the Dailies in Kenya, educating the public on issues pertaining to child and adolescent mental health.  She is also a qualified trainer in the corporate sector and has trained medical staff in various hospitals in Africa.  She has also held trainings in schools and the judicial sectors.
